Attorney General Anil Nandlall on today announced that government has received critical information from the United States Justice Department on the sanctions imposed on businessmen Nazar Mohamed and Azruddin Mohamed, along with Permanent Secretary Mae Thomas.

The three were sanctioned nine months ago by the US Department of Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which accused Mohamed’s enterprise of evading taxes on gold exports and defrauding the Guyanese government by under-declaring gold shipments.

The Treasury Department said between 2019 and 2023, Mohamed Enterprise allegedly omitted more than 10,000 kilograms of gold from import and export declarations, avoiding an estimated US$50 million in duty taxes.

The Attorney General told reporters that the information has been turned over to the Guyana Revenue Authority and the Guyana Police to conduct their investigations.
