A team of highly trained policemen was involved in a vehicular accident as they were heading to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on Monday.
According to the communication department of the police force, the ranks attached to the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (SWAT) were on duty and headed to the airport to escort cricketers.
West Indies and Bangladesh will be playing their final T-20 match this Thursday at the Providence Stadium.
The release stated that the SWAT vehicle bearing license plate number PAB 3120 was heading south along the eastern side of the Soesdyke Public Road, East Bank Demerara at a fast rate of speed when the driver overtook a motor car and ended up in the path of an oncoming motor van bearing license plate number GWW 7777 resulting in a head-on collision.
The driver of that motor van Jiang Cheng according to the release sustained injuries to his head and about his body. He is presently a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital. One member of the SWAT team sustained minor injuries.
A breathalyzer test was conducted on the two drivers but no trace of alcohol was found in their systems.
