Four persons have been taken into custody and more than sixty million in gold and cash seized following the search of a city building on Thursday by the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU).
According to a press statement issued by SOCU, the search was based on intelligence received. Those detained are two Brazilian nations, a Cuban, and a Guyanese.
The Special Organised Crime Unit said its officers seized $31 million in local currency and more than $30 million in gold which has been described as a significant breakthrough in the fight against illicit gold smuggling.
Head of SOCU Deputy Police Commissioner Fazil Karimbaksh said the officers were able to disrupt the smuggling operation before the gold was moved, as he warned gold smugglers to stop the illicit activity or face the full force of the law.
SOCU said this latest crackdown follows a similar enforcement action executed on March 5th in Lethem, which saw two persons being arrested.
