Commuters living and working on the East Coast of Demerara can expect some relief as the Ministry of Public Works has announced that it will be executing a series of emergency works which includes a temporary bridge at Strathspey.

Commuters found themselves in long lives of traffic for hours following the closure of the Strathspey Bridges last week. The road closure was necessary after the structural integrity of the bridge was compromised under the weight of an overloaded truck.

Frustrated travellers with little alternatives took to social media to voice their frustration.

In a press statement the Public Works Ministry said considering the many complaints from the public regarding the severe traffic congestion and major inconveniences it has engaged contractor H. Nauth & Sons to install precast concrete slabs that will serve as a temporary bridge deck. The emergency works, the Ministry said, will be expedited and the bridge is expected to be reopened for use within the next 48 hours.

Further, considering the increased strain on alternative routes, urgent repairs will be undertaken on the Bladen Hall School Road and the Coldingen Road to improve traffic flow and minimize disruptions during the period.

The Ministry said it was asking commuters to remain patient and exercise caution when using alternative routes.

Initially the ministry said the construction of the new bridge would have taken some three months.
