A loss of power at the Providence Stadium on Tuesday during Caribbean Premier League match between Trinidad Knight Riders and Barbados Royals was the result three of the six flood lights losing power.

According to a joint press statement released by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the Guyana Power and Light Inc power for the matches are not supplied by the power company but an independent generating set located in stadium. However, the statement said GPL was on standby at all the matches to render assistance.

The statement said the stadium’s technical staff and GPL worked assiduously to restore power to the third floodlight which had a technical fault with the underground cable feeding power to the flood light. A substitute cable was installed for the lights to be operational again. This was achieved at 10:51 pm some more than two hours after losing power.

According to the statement an additional technical assessment will be carried out to ensure that there is no recurrence.

Meanwhile, heady duty machinery dealer MACORP issued a statement clearing itself. The company said the loss of electricity had nothing to do with the independent generating sets located in the stadium. The company said it was fully equipped and committed to supporting major events in Guyana. The company said its CAT XQC M1600 power module offers 1.6 megawatts in continuous power with impressive capacity and reliability.

The match ended with Barbados securing a spot in the second qualifier after defeating Trinbago Knight Riders. The Duckworth-Lewis method was introduced in the eliminator following the power loss.
