A New and United Guyana (ANUG) today accused Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir and the Chair of the Guyana Elections Commission Retired Justice Claudette Singh of bias and being selective in dealing with parliamentary matters.

In a press statement the party said it was highlighting what it said was a serious lack of integrity and impartiality of the speaker of the national assembly and GECOM chair when it comes to parliament matters, adding that their actions expose double standards.

Commenting on the swearing in of new People’s Progressive Party MP – Suresh Singh, the speaker continues to ignore the case of Dr. Asha Kissoon, who it said was unlawfully occupying her parliamentary seat.

The Deputy Speaker, ANUG said entered parliament under unconstitutional circumstances and that the legitimate representative of her list Dr. Gerald Ford had recalled her. Despite this, the speaker refuses to act, effectively allowing her to occupy the seat in direct violation of established constitutional and legal norms. This refusal, ANUG said, stands in stark contrast to the speed and efficiency displayed in addressing the PPP/C’s vacancy.

The party questioned how can public trust be maintained when constitutional breaches are ignored for some while resolved swiftly for others?

ANUG said the failure to act on Dr. Kissoon’s case undermines the integrity of the National Assembly and erodes public confidence in its leadership. The party said too that it was calling on civil society, the Guyana Bar Association, political parties, legal experts, international observers and Guyanese to demand accountability and transparency from the speaker of the national assembly and GECOM chair.
