Long-time member and former General Secretary of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Amna Ally has resigned from the party.

Ms. Ally in a letter to party leader Aubrey Norton on Sunday said she was terminating her 54-year-membership with the party immediately over the continuous disregard for women, who she said are the backbone of the party.

The former government minister under the APNU+AFC administration said Norton and his entire executive should hang their heads in shame and resign, as she said she could not continue to support such a party.

In condemning the treatment of women, Ms. Ali said made mention of a “curse out” and shameful act meted out to former Member of Parliament Vanessa Kissoon, Mayor of Linden Sharma Solomon, and Senior Party official Cheryl Sampson in the presence of the party’s General Secretary at the party’s Congress Place headquarters during an event organised by the National Congress of Women.

According to her, the lewd behaviour which went unchecked by the party leadership occurred during an event which was meant to improve the quality-of-service women gave to the party.

“I wish to reiterate that I cannot support a party which disrespect the role played by women who have always been the backbone of the PNCR and call upon Aubrey Norton and the clique that surround him in the central executive to resign and save the party.

Ms. Ally accused the group of operating as if they owned the party, “I have no hesitation, among deep hurt and regret, to tender my resignation and to call on all right-thinking women in the Party to stand up to this new tyrant. Leadership must be given by Leaders not rascals, bullies, embezzlers, and indiscipline persons.

Amna Ally who was not in support of Aubrey Norton being re-elected as party leader had taken a back seat in the party’s operation.
