Anyone be it Guyanese and otherwise found supporting Venezuela’s planned election to name a government for the Essequibo Region will face the consequences says Home Affairs Minister, Robeson Benn.
Speaking at the Guyana Police Force’s Inspector and Sergeant Conference, Minister Benn in condemning issued the warning that charges of treason will be instituted against anyone who supports the Elections in May.
“We know Maduro is saying that the 23rd of May he will hold elections in Venezuela, and he will appoint governors and other officials for Guayana Esequiba. And I have said today, again, any person, Guyanese or otherwise, if is a Guyanese who is appointed to be governor of Essequibo and be in place at Anna, Regina, we will charge that person for treason and lock them up each and every one of them”.
Minister Benn said the same will go for anyone who is found supporting the election.
“The issue of Essequibo and the settlement he 1899 arbitral award was settled a long time ago and they had no interest in it until they had political problems there and then when we found the oil”.
According to Minister Benn Venezuelan can come on the Cuyuni below Eteringbang for what he said was purposes of innoncent passage.
“Same thing out in our maritime the EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone) it’s only innocent passage. They don’t have a right to come into our place all of the monitoring the EIS so we don’t know where they are intimidate people it is not innocent passage but we are the warships and the planes and all these things to deal with them in the way that should be done, so we have to get support”.
Minister Benn told the gathering that Guyana has the support of her international partners on this matter.
Addressing the seventy-five Venezuelans who were deported on Tuesday, the minister commended police officers who he said did a good job. The seventy-five he said were housed at the New Opportunity Corps for the night.
“They did not report to an immigration place point of entry. They landed up there where they could not have bedded, escaped three or four other places where they could have reported. We said put them out, seized the boat, an engine, if there any of them who have familial ties in Guyana, we will keep them”.
According to the Minister, we do not want sleepers here, “we do not want people to come and not be recognized and identified. We know that there are some sleepers here. We put out a few already”.

The Guyana Police Force’s Corporate Communications Unit reported that 75 Venezuelans including 57 adult males, nine adult females, and nine children arrived illegally on the Essequibo Coast on Monday. They traveled via a 45-foot boat powered by a 75-horsepower Yamaha outboard engine. Authorities deported them on Tuesday.
