The Guyana Veterans Legion on Monday issued a statement condemning Venezuela’s latest act of aggression against Guyana.
The Legion whose membership include former men and women in uniform and relatives of veterans said the two recent incidents one which left six servicemen injured during an attack on the Cuyuni River and the second being Venezuela’s incursion in Guyana’s waters with an armed vessel and threatening ExxonMobil do not appear to be random.
According to the Legion the incidents seem to be the beginning of another deliberate attempt by Venezuela to destabilise and intimidate Guyana, adding that they are violating Guyana’s sovereignty.
The Legion underscores that Guyana’s 83,000 square miles and its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) belong to Guyana, adding that Guyana retains its sovereign right to engage in business ventures whenever and with whomever for its development.
The veterans said they stand resolutely in support of the Government and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) as they call on Guyanese to be unified in the face of these threats.
