Guyanese can begin to apply for a ten-year validity passport according to the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Ministry said the initiative comes into effect today, February 10.
The Ministry in a press statement said the new passport comes with enhanced security features and design elements aimed at improving both identity protection and the travel experience of Guyanese.
Applicants, the ministry said, will have the option to select between a five-year or ten-year validity period.
The cost for the five-year validity remains at $6,000 but the ten-year validity comes with a cost of $12,000, allowing individuals to make an informed decision based on their needs.
An electronic chip will be embedded in the new passport, which aligns with the international standards for secure travel documents, ensuring smoother border crossings and enhanced authentications. Additionally, the new passport, the ministry said, embraces the One Guyana theme, reflecting the nation’s unity and cultural diversity.

The new passport will also aid in data collection, as all applicants will be required to undergo biometric enrollment, including fingerprinting, to further enhance document security.
It should be noted that persons who registered for a new passport on or before February 7 will receive the old passport but applicants from February 10th will receive the new e-passport.
The Ministry said to prevent any abuse of the system, the process of replacing lost or damaged passports is currently under review. However, the existing policy remains in effect as future adjustments could include extended waiting periods for replacement documents to deter and investigate possible fraudulent claims.
According to the ministry citizens are encouraged to stay updated as the transition unfolds, adding that further updates will include the activation of the online application platform will be shared in due course.
