A twenty-seven-year-old East La Penitence woman was today remanded to prison on a charge of possession of narcotics.

On Monday, the woman A’ishah McKenzie who was an outgoing passenger at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport destined for St. Lucia with onward connections to London was busted with just over five pounds of cocaine.

According to a statement released by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) its officers were performing narcotic interdiction duties at the airport when they conducted a routine search on McKenzie when the illicit substance was found. McKenzie appeared in court this morning and pleaded not guilty to the charge. Her bail application was denied, and she was placed in the custody of the Guyana Prison Service until March 5th when she is expected to make her second court appearance.
